What is a Solar Eclipse in Astrology?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon gets in between the Sun and Earth, known as a conjunction in astrology. This alignment causes the Moon to temporarily block the Sun’s light resulting in e partial or total eclipse. Solar eclipses can only happen during a new moon phase.
Solar eclipses are associated with new beginnings, changes, and transformation, and are believed to bring about sudden and unexpected events or changes. They are often seen as a time of great potential and opportunity, and can mark the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another. This change can be painful at times, but it is still necessary to guide us out of certain situations or out of our comfort zone.
Solar eclipses occur about twice a year, and they happen on the same zodiac sign axis for 18 months.
What is a Lunar Eclipse in Astrology?
A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth gets in between the Sun and Moon, blocking the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon, forming an opposition (180°) between the Sun and the moon. Lunar eclipses can only happen during a full moon phase.
Lunar eclipses are associated with endings, closure, and letting go. They are believed to bring unresolved issues to the surface and can bring about a sense of emotional intensity or turmoil. Lunar eclipses are also seen as a time of reflection and introspection, and can be a good time to release old patterns or habits that no longer serve us.
Lunar eclipses occur about twice a year, and they happen on the opposite zodiac sign axis of solar eclipses. For example, if a solar eclipse happen in Taurus, then a lunar eclipse will be in Scorpio.
Eclipses & the Lunar Nodes in Astrology
As previously mentioned, eclipses are believed to be connected to our past lives and the purpose of our souls. One may question, how do eclipses tie into our karmic paths?
The explanation is very straightforward. Eclipses happen only when the alignment of the Sun and Moon take place near one of the lunar nodes.
Scientifically, the nodes, known as the ascending and descending nodes, are special points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent annual path on the celestial sphere. These nodes are purely mathematical constructs and do not have a physical presence in the sky like a planet would.
An interesting fact is that if the tilt of the Moon’s orbit did not have a 5-degree angle relative to the ecliptic (the path of the Sun), an eclipse would occur every full and new moon. However, due to this small 5° angle, lunar and solar eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon align in close proximity to one of the lunar nodes.
In astrology, the lunar nodes are also called the Nodes of Destiny or the Nodes of Fate. Thus, as the name implies, these nodes symbolize fate, destiny, and our life path and purpose.

Today, this belief persists, as eclipses are often hyped by the media and portrayed as ominous, fatalistic events. However, it’s important to remember that eclipses are regular astrological occurrences, happening 4-6 times a year. How do you know if an eclipse will impact you personally?
To determine if a solar or lunar eclipse will personally impact you, there are a few factors to consider.
- First, you should know the exact degree and zodiac sign where the eclipse is occurring. This information can be found online or in my free Lunar Calendar 2023.
- Next, you should calculate your birth chart to determine which house the eclipse will fall into and whether you have any personal planets or important chart points in that house. Keep in mind that you need to know your exact time of birth to accurately calculate your chart with astrological houses.
When analyzing your birth chart, consider the following:
- What house the eclipse falls into? The house should give you some clues on what areas of life might be affected by an eclipse.
- Do you have any personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, or Mars) or chart points (ASC, DSC, MC, IC) within 2 degrees of the eclipse?
For example, if the eclipse occurs at 20° Aries and you have your Moon at 19°, 20°, or 21°, then there is a higher probability that the eclipse will have an impact on your life.
